BACKGROUND

The programme available is the MSc/Postgraduate Diploma in Psychiatry.

The first year of the programme, comprising the MRCPsych Paper 2 and Paper 3, was offered for the last time in September 2010. All students entering the MSc programme in September 2011 are on year 2.

Rationale for the programme


The MSc/PG Diploma in Psychiatry Programme is a University accredited programme which is intended for those trainees in Psychiatry who wish to develop basic knowledge and skills in psychiatric research and have an interest in pursuing a career in academic psychiatry. The taught component of this programme is composed of the MRCPsych Paper 2 and Paper 3 units plus MSc/PG Diploma specific units. In addition, students on the MSc undertake a piece of supervised research leading to a dissertation.


The structure of the programme is outlined below:


Year 1.
(Offered for the last time in September 2010)
 
33.5 days over 1 year covering MRCPsych Paper 2 and Paper 3 course units.
     
Year 2.
 
26.5 whole days over 1 year covering specific MSc course units, including research methods.

The third year is used for data collection and writing up of a research dissertation. The Postgraduate Diploma is an exit option only at the end of year 2.
